What can cause this problem?
Long drying times can come from a blocked lint screen, restricted venting, oversized loads, or a heating-system fault. A dryer may tumble even when it cannot heat correctly. A repair assessment needs to consider both the machine and its airflow; replacing a part without finding the cause can leave the problem unresolved.
| What you notice | What could be involved |
|---|---|
| Drum turns, but no heat | A setting, power-supply, heating, or safety-device issue |
| Several cycles to dry a load | Restricted airflow, a large load, or weak heating |
| Squealing, scraping, or no tumbling | A belt, roller, bearing, or motor issue |
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. Your model and diagnostic checks determine the cause.
What can you check before calling?
Stay with controls and parts your owner’s manual identifies as user-accessible. Do not remove panels, move heavy appliances, or test electrical circuits.
Check the cycle
Make sure an air-only or no-heat cycle was not selected. Follow the care label and model instructions.
Clean the lint screen
Remove lint from the user-accessible screen before another load. Do not run the dryer without the screen in place.
Reduce an oversized load
Clothes need room to tumble. Check the manual’s load recommendations and avoid repeatedly running a dryer that is unusually hot.
When should you stop using it?
Stop using the dryer if it overheats, smells burnt, or has damaged venting. For a suspected gas leak, leave the area and contact your gas utility or emergency services from a safe place. Do not test gas components yourself.
What helps prepare for a diagnosis?
Tell us gas or electric, whether the drum turns, whether any heat is produced, and where the dryer is installed. Mention stacked units and any recent vent work.
When you call, ask about the next available visit, diagnostic charges, and who can authorize the work. The cause needs to be established through diagnosis; a symptom alone does not determine the cost or the part needed.
Use the instructions for your model.
This is a general TopPro guide, not a manufacturer-specific repair procedure. Use your appliance’s manual for settings, filters, and permitted checks. Instructions vary by model.
